Joey Black - Owner/Artist at Lucky 13 Tattoo

I started learning how to tattoo in 2005. As a child I saw my mother who was very artistic creating various forms of art. The first time I saw a Tattoo was on my uncle who was in the Army, I remember being so fascinated and told my Mom I want a Tattoo and she said maybe one day..  I grew up always drawing/ creating little pencil sketches for friends in school and would do the Lick em' and stick em' pretend tattoos on my friends never guessing that one day I would become a tattoo artist..  In my teenage years I dreamed of being a rock star, I started playing in heavy metal bands and started getting heavily Tattooed.  I remember being so fascinated by the whole concept of Tattooing and the application of Tattoos.  I thought it was so cool that tattoo artists actually get paid for doing something so rad and to me, Tattoo artists were rock stars!  So after many years of playing live shows and recording albums and living the Rock Star lifestyle, I realized that something was missing in my life.  I craved another form of artistic expression and creative process.

"I knew I Needed to learn how to Tattoo."   Without any direction I continued  working on drawing more often and learning how to Oil Paint.   In 2004 my brother & I opened Lucky 13 Tattoo & Piercing in the suburbs of Colorado! 4 years later after my brother/ partner passed I moved to a New location outside of Denver in Lakewood Colorado, My Tattoo family had grown into quite an organization of artists and body modification professionals. In 2025 Once again I was ready for a change and Closed Lucky 13 Tattoo and opened up My Private Studio " Studio 13 Tattoo".  Always pushing myself to get better and keeping on the cutting edge of Tattooing / new developments, tools and techniques in the industry, I finally felt comfortable tattooing most anything and continued to strive to become a force to be reckoned with in the Tattoo world. I take Tattooing and it's permanence Very seriously, for me it is the highest form of art, and it is an honor to be able to put my art on a human canvas.  It has changed my life and I have found more Joy & Love in the art of Tattooing than I have ever thought possible.  I have the deepest love, honor, and respect for the art and the artists who have come before us.

Thank you.
